PACAP-38 (Pituitary Adenylate Cyclase-Activating Polypeptide-38) is a neuropeptide composed of 38 amino acids, highly conserved across multiple species, including humans, mice, sheep, pigs, and rats. It plays diverse physiological roles in various systems. PACAP-38 promotes neuronal survival through the cAMP-PKA pathway, reducing oxidative stress and inflammation. It also regulates the function of T cells and macrophages, suppressing the release of inflammatory cytokines, thereby contributing to immune modulation. In the cardiovascular system, PACAP-38 enhances myocardial function and inhibits cardiomyocyte apoptosis by activating the adenylyl cyclase pathway. Additionally, in the gastrointestinal system, it modulates smooth muscle contraction and secretion through the enteric nervous system.
